E-learning Course Template

For any project, I design a course template that reveals the overall look and feel of the course, before I develop the final e-learning solution. I designed this elegant and minimalist course template for an Employee Onboarding course. It has a custom menu and a custom course progress bar that blends subtly into the slide layout. I’ve also used an offbeat colour scheme that reflects professionalism and sophistication.

In most projects, the colours and fonts are based on the organisation’s branding guidelines. However, I still make my final decisions on colour with help from Coolors. With Coolors, I ensure that my palettes are colour-blind friendly too. My inspiration for font combinations is Fontjoy.

Even if a client gives me their own templates, I have to usually tweak the design a bit. It is only after several attempts that the final design (including the layout, the colours and the fonts), is finalized. Here are some slide designs that didn’t make it to the final cut of this e-learning course template.

Fully Responsive Course on Health and Safety (Rise 360)

This sample course provides learners with a basic awareness of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH). It is divided into small, easily digestible chunks and is peppered with interactivity, images and quotes. It is fully responsive, which means that the course renders well on any screen: laptop, tablet or mobile.

In the UK, COSHH training is mandatory for employees who work with harmful substances. So when a client wanted a traditional e-learning course on COSHH, I created a complete, slide-based course for them in Storyline 3. I also designed this small, responsive sample with all the extra information I’d gathered. Thanks to the power of Rise 360, I developed this sample in a matter of hours.

Slide-Based E-learning

I made this short sample course to give you a glimpse of the typical slide-based courses that I create in Articulate Storyline. In this demo, you can experience all the typical elements, such as video, clickable tabs and restricted learner navigation. It also has a JavaScript-powered learning activity, which gives the learner some real-world practice.

This sample is based on an original four-part course that I created for UK-based learners.

Fully Responsive Course on Pepper Processing (Evolve Authoring)

This is a fully responsive course on pepper processing, I created for Learn Appeal, an e-learning industry charity. It was created in Evolve Authoring, a highly cost-effective tool for creating responsive HTML5 e-learning content.

Learn Appeal works on learning initiatives for remote communities in sub-Saharan Africa. Many of the learners in these communities don’t have mains electricity, never mind internet access. Presented with these constraints, Evolve Authoring is the tool of choice at Learn Appeal. Their targeted learning resources can be accessed on all kinds of devices without the need for internet or even mains electricity.
