About Sample
When my son was little, he followed a strict “no story, no sleep” policy. So for a few years, I was pouring out stories like a vending machine. While my son quickly outgrew my stories, I developed a bedtime routine: reading or listening to stories. Wafting into a dream-like state as I listen to Deborah Treisman’s fiction podcast at bedtime is my definition of contentment.
I believe we humans love a good story, which is why my eLearning courses have relied on stories. A LOT. The story of the CEO who offered her holiday home to the mayor was the pièce de résistance of my course on bribery. The story of the young man who traveled the world in search of wine made my course on wines memorable. The story of the salesperson who would strategically qualify prospects was declared “brilliant” by my client.
My quest for writing better stories has led me to academic papers and advice from master storytellers like Neil Gaiman and Martin Scorsese. Crafting a best-seller novel isn’t easy. However, weaving a narrative into eLearning is much easier, especially if you understand basic storytelling mechanics.
Storytelling mechanics include many elements like setting, characters, narrative, plot, pacing, dialogue, and theme. In this microlearning sample, which I developed in Articulate Rise, I’ve chosen to give you my insights on one element: the plot. I give an overview of the archetypal plots and have also included authentic examples of different plots in eLearning. Visually, I left my comfort zone and went with a bold and flamboyant color palette.
