Digital Storytelling with Articulate Storyline and JavaScript
Who doesn’t love a good story? Mundane topics can be made memorable with a well-chosen story. Some interesting digital storytelling formats that I like to employ are comic book story panels and interactive videos. In this micro-story, however, I’ve used a vertical scrolling format. The story is about credit card fraud and is inspired by a real-life incident. The reason it works is that:
- It has all the elements of a story plot: setup, rising tension, climax and resolution.
- It reflects the real world.
- It is short and sweet.
- The design elements spice it up and add to the story.
- The UI is simple and easy to navigate.
I’ve used some epic music and a bold colour scheme to arouse an emotional response in the viewer. I spent a lot of time on these two aspects. These are some earlier colour schemes I tried out before settling for an intense, colourblind-friendly five-colour palette.

The vertical scrolling format is a departure from the usual slide-based format. I was able to create it by tapping into Storyline’s scrolling panels and JavaScript. Many thanks to Chris Hodgson for sharing his expertise on scrolling panels with JavaScript.
